This howto will help you start using Matrix. I will take you thru the process to download the client, how to setup your account, and then teach you how to use the Matrix. [Here is a small video explaining what Matrix is.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BieAw6lwntU) |
## Download a client |
There are a couple of different clients out there, but most use Element, which was created by the same people who created Matrix. |
If you do not want to put it on a phone, then just use the Element web client or download the desktop client for your operating system. |
On Android, I suggest you NOT install from the G00g Play "Toy" Store and do the following instead: |
1. Install F-Droid store, which you can do with this QR. |
![download-fdroid-qr-code](images/download-fdroid-qr.png) |
1. Open F-Droid and search for [Element](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/im.vector.app/). |
1. Install Element and go to the next section. |
On iOS (Apple), install [Element app from their store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/element-messenger/id1083446067). |
## Creating a Matrix Account |
Now one of the **major advantages** to Matrix is that it is decentralized and federated. What this means is that each Matrix server talks to each other and that a user with an account on one server is able to communicate with other users on different servers. [Here is a small video explaining it.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BieAw6lwntU) Feel free to read up on more of that if you'd like, but it is outside of scope here. |
### First: Choose the server you want |
The Matrix server I use is hosted by PrivacyTools, and you can use this server if you want to by [visiting here](https://privacytools.io/services/chat/). Again, the awesome thing about Matrix is that you can create an account on any server (and can even host your own server if you want to). |
[Here is a small list of some different servers and you can choose what you want.](https://glowers.club/wiki/doku.php?id=wiki:newfriends#what_homeserver_should_i_use) |
And yet [another list](https://publiclist.anchel.nl/) for you to choose from. |
### Second: Create the account |
* Here you will substitute which Matrix server you chose and follow along with these instructions. |
Depending upon what you are using, please refer to these clearly written tutorials with screenshots written by the Monero Core Team. I believe their server is public, so you are free to use their server if you wanted to. |
* [How to join Matrix via Web](https://forum.monero.space/d/79-how-to-join-the-monero-core-team-matrix-server-web) |
* [How to join Matrix via Android](https://forum.monero.space/d/81-how-to-join-the-monero-core-team-matrix-server-android) |
* [How to join Matrix via Apple iPhone](https://forum.monero.space/d/82-how-to-join-the-monero-core-team-matrix-server-apple-ios) |
* Now you should have a Matrix account on the server you chose. |
## Now how do I use Matrix? |
![you-can-do-it](images/you-can-do-it.jpeg) |
Now you just have to familiarize yourself with this new software. You will be able to join any Matrix chatroom on any server, so there are a ton out there. Do not get overwhelmed & I'm going to include some other tutorials below to help you get familiar with Element. |
1. Check under the [section titled "Getting Connected" here](https://frontpagelinux.com/tutorials/beginners-guide-how-to-get-started-with-element-matrix/) to learn more about how to join rooms. |
1. I will have to add more but this is the first draft... |
### Hush has a Matrix room |
![Trust in Hush](images/baby-hush-hush.gif) |
Feel free to join the Hush puppies on Matrix. |

Our channel is #hush:privacytools.io, so come on down! |

#### Other resources |
* [This site has good info](https://glowers.club/wiki/doku.php?id=wiki:newfriends). |
## That wraps it up! |
And if you are wondering "Why not Signal?", then you can learn more about their shitcoin (called MobileCoin) and why you do not want it in your life in [this recent video here from The Hated One](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJoO2uWrX1M). **Signal can not be trusted anymore...** |
And here's a Quote from the [The MobileCoin Foundation](https://www.mobilecoin.foundation/about) website: |
``` |
At MobileCoin, we believe governments have a legitimate interest in regulating the economic lives of their citizens. |
``` |
I don't want that in my life. Do you want that in yours? |
